Changin' Washington Park

For our Civic Term class Music that Matters, We were given a task from a nonprofit organization called My Block, My Hood, My City to find an idea that will improve my neighborhood. Since I live near George Washington Park on 51st and King Drive, I feel like having a 30-foot slave owner hovering over the descendants of slaves needs improvement. We were also added music to boost the feeling of support for our block. We talked with many artists about protest and learned that art can create an opinion.  I think that having this in action will not only affect my neighborhood but spark others to do the same. I think the hardest part was the video

Bike for 2, please!

For our second AP of Design & Engineering, We were assigned a persona to create our bikes from. My persona, Vanessa, has to bike 4 miles from United Center in Chicago. We had in-person and virtual encounters with Divvy and Earth Riders   to teach us about the parts of bikes and their properties.  I interviewed my dad who is a biker and when i asked if there was any problems about riding in Chicago and he said there is too many potholes so we used both into one bike called the BIKE FOR 2™

The Transgender War

In our second Art of Rhetoric AP, we talked about the status quo and Op-Ed. During this unit, we also met with a young alderman of the 40th ward, Ugo Okere. He discussed that being a public speaker is important when expressing your opinion. And during our FE to the Marquette Park Memorial on the west of 67th, we conversed about how it doesn't take just one important person to change an opinion, it takes a community. In this AP we were to choose an opinion that society thinks is true and put OUR opinion in there and provide facts.  How society thinks that being a transgender man/woman and being a drag queen/king is the same, is false and inaccurate. Being transgender is identifying as a different or opposite gender than the one you were born. Being a  drag queen means that you change your gender to entertain or perform.  The main star of the famous drag queen tv show RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul comments a ton of derogatory words towards trans people. “I love the word ‘...

Garden Shear-ye

In my first Junior STEAM core class, Design and Engineering, we virtually learned about tools and how they came to be. We had the privilege to meet via video meetings with Dyson engineers and designers to learn about the design process and the reinvention of basic items. We also met with Greater Good Studio and talked about empathy and how each product can be available to everyone, despite the disability or the circumstance. For our Action Project, we had to redesign a garden tool for the elderly or the disabled.  We also interviewed my mother, who was a gardener and she said that an acquaintance who had arthritis was unable to use garden shears because of their disease. So my partner and I chose to create a completely new design for garden shears for people with arthritis. To view my partner’s Action Project click here . Letter to Walter

In my last unit of my sophomore year, we learned about racism and segregation. During this pandemic, we have dealt with racism by police brutality and violence from the authority who abuse their power. we also had a lawyer or attorney who experienced racism in the real estate business and had to work with others who suffer from racism. The story we were assigned to create a perspective letter is the famous play, Rasin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. This play, set in the south side of Chicago, is about a 5-person, black, family suffering from a 2 bedroom apartment until they receive a $10,000 check from the mother's late husband's life insurance. Throughout the play, the family goes through many obstacles before the mother spends her money on a new house but it is in a place where it is majority white and it’s his choice if he moves into the house and lives in a nice-sized house or sells the house to a white man who says the community around their house is “uncomfortable” for...

DELIVER DA BABY

In our second unit of our STEAM class Cure, we learned about surgeries. During that time we learned what each suffix and prefix in each surgery name mean and we have talked to two professionals about surgeries and how it connects to 2020's pandemic that caused the world to stop, COVID-19. We were supposed to show the process of the surgery from beginning to end Interview with C-section patient The interviewer in regular font Erika Howard Bailey in a special font I'm interviewing Erica Howard Bailey on Wednesday, May six at 3:55 PM. On April 19, 2004, she had a C section, the official name of that C-section, and it's called cesarean section. It's a ceremony and section is where during the birth of a baby, if the baby can not be delivered through the vaginal opening, the doctors will have to surgically cut, open the stomach to the uterus a bove the pubic hairline. The first decision is to cut through The stomach to expose the uterus. The second incision is w...

Trapping the Shrew

In my Drama class, we learned about Shakespeare's plays and women's struggle for rights. A shrew is a person who is not fitting the gender role "requirement". The play we read was The Taming of the Shrew and it is about a man named Christopher Sly comes in a bar and falls asleep and the owner of the place said to prank him in thinking he is a lord. After sober, Sly is treated to a play. In that play, there is a rich "prince" named Lucentio and his male servants, Tranio and Biondello, arrive in the Italian city name Padua to attend a university. During his search, he spots a beautiful young woman named Bianca and wants to marry her but he sees that she has two men who also want to marry her, Grumio and Hortensio. but for Bianca to get married, someone has to marry her “crazy” sister, Katherine. Pertucio, hortensio’s friend chooses to help hortensio get Bianca by marrying Katherine, only for her father’s money. When Katherine gets married, Pertucio comes in ...

Epidemics and Such

For our final presentation, I wanted to talk about the nationwide epidemic, COVID-19 or better known as Coronavirus. I made a presentation for the topic and question: How can epidemics be contained?

Asthma can take your breath away

Lorane is a 34-year-old woman with a 17-year-old son who uses a lot of cologne, preferably Axe. So when Lorane walks in his room, the mask of the spray makes her cough and wheeze. She was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 11. She would wheeze in between her coughs and she coughs until she spits out clear mucus. So she drinks a lot of water to clear her throat When she was 11, she was playing with her mom’s perfume after playing, she has pain or tightness on her chest, which is the first symptom for asthma. Then she was coughing a lot and was wheezing, another symptom. Her mom finally took to the hospital after she had a hard time sleeping because she couldn’t breathe. That is when she was diagnosed with asthma. Now she has to stay away from strong fragrances and sprays. She will start coughing and she uses her daily inhaler since she works at Sephora. She said, “the hardest thing is to deal with is I have to live with it (the smells) every day”. 5%-10% of the world’s population h...

The Word About Bulimia is Stomach Churning

Image
In the second unit of my sophomore STEAM class, Disease, we studied mental disorders and learned about their criteria and how they affect people. We also examined the diseases on a scientific level using the DSM-V, we also took different approaches to experience a fraction of what people suffering from mental disorders go through every day. We also had to give an interactive presentation to our classmates. The goal for this action project was to educate people about what it's like to have a specific mental disorder found in the DSM, I chose Bulimia. I felt like Bulimia was very common in teens and but not talked about. We also learned how to use brain waves into a piecewise graph so we can see the changes over time. We have also made a flier to raise awareness for a targeted audience. The most difficult part of this project is the creativity of the interactive part of the presentation.   Work Cited http://www.columbia.edu/itc/hs/medical/residency/peds/new_compeds_sit...

The Hate U Give *Exclusive Interview with Starr Carter*

In our second unit of Forbidden books, we learned about books that have been censored for big or small reasons. We went on a trip to see an author's book was banned in Illinois jails and was able to ask questions of why her book was banned. We also learned dogma. Dogma is a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true.  Then we were able to choose a banned book to read and interview with a character. I chose The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. this book has won many awards and even had a movie less than a year later. This young girl named Starr carter experienced her close friend, Kahlil Harris being shot by a police officer unarmed. Then she chooses to go through the pressure of being a witness and go through code-switching with her friends at her all-white school and her home in the projects.    I chose to instead of doing a podcast I will be doing a radio show.  Tran script Passionfruit fades out Enjoli: Aaaaand we a...

War On Black People Or Drugs

In my Forbidden books class, we learned about censorship on books and how they were censored. Censorship on books is "a form of censorship that occurs when private individuals, government officials, or organizations remove books from libraries, school reading lists, or bookstore shelves because they object to their content, ideas, or themes." from Middle Tennessee State. People want to censor books because they think it will affect the younger generation to rebel against the traditional ways.   We also learned about Socrates and ancient Greece, their style of learning and Socrates' questioning life. Socrates was a philosopher who rebelled the idea of greek gods. He is important to western civilization because he shows us students to question things your parents and teachers believe about reality and society. That is where he made the Socratic dialogue. A Socratic dialogue is a communication that perceives two people where one person answers questions and the other questio...

Coffee with Conditons

At the beginning of the civic term, I was not expecting the creativity everybody developed in my group and the class overall. The topic of our play is how women are underestimated and underrated. The planning was that there are three different monologues about how women are paid lower than men, what the ideal "feminist" is supposed to be, how street harassment ranges, and how a man's perspective about a man is supposed to be as well. In our class, we also learned about the oppression of minorities, lower-class people, and the LGBTQ community. We had to do monologues,  which is a long speech by one actor in a play or movie, or as part of a theatrical or broadcast program. My monologue is about how women are "catcalled" in the streets and how it ranges. I found out that from the earliest age of 12 older men are sexually harassing them already. There are women who were killed because they didn't respond to a catcall. During that, I have the experience of a man...

Unbreakable Kitty

This is an activity project for my STEAM class called population. Unit 2 of my population class was classified "From/To". In this unit, we concentrated on Charles Darwin's Hypothesis of Advancement, Normal Choice, and living beings' capacity to adjust to their surroundings. We have been learning the distinction between transformation, characteristic choice, variety, and advancement. We have been attempting to fuse this into this present reality and how it can influence the creatures we know today. We have additionally been finding out about the mean, middle, and mode alongside the main quartile, third quartile, and the IQR. For this Activity Venture, my class should discover around twenty felines and pooches. We at that point gathered their loads and surmised statures and put them into a spreadsheet. From that point onward, we were each doled out an arbitrary gathering of felines or hounds and a situation that would be their new home. With our new gatherings and condi...

Miles And My Dad

For as far back as two weeks, we have learned what is a hero. What I took from this was on the off chance that you accomplish something that isn't called for you are a hero. We have also been working on trying to understand why people are heroes. We have been taking a gander at fictional heroes and real heroes. We were comparing their adventures with the hero's journeys by Joseph Campbell. I was truly excited about this process since I never truly thought how heroes became or if the characters in the movies were truly hero so this was surprising to me. The heroes I chose is Miles Morales form Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse  and I interviewed my Dad, Emmanuel Sally.

The Dog and the Sheep

Image
In this action project, we were told to learn and make a fable. It was very enticing but very hard. using similes were not in this story. Colton the dog, was walking to his new school with his mom while eating a ham and cheese sandwich. He was skipping like a frog when he tripped on an emerging root from the enormous oak tree, spilling his sandwich on the filthy ground. “Are you ok, pup?” “I'm okay, mama” The tree looked very intimidating as it stood over him like Robert, the tallest giraffe on this planet. After the long astonishment by him and his new classmates, he spotted this meek little sheep who was trembling vigorously in fear. So Colton rushed over to see what was wrong with the quivering lamb. “Are you okay?” Colton questioned. The ball of fluff answered meekly “I-I’m nervous”. “It's ok,’’ Colton said, “We’ll make it through. Together.” “o-okay” squeaked the lamb. “I’m Colton, what’s your name” “I’m Ava.” Suddenly, they were silent when they hear...

The Birth of Htrae

Image
Welcome to my first action project for Stories. In class we have been discussing creation stories and how they may influence us and how they were made back quite a while in the past. For this activity venture, we had the option to make our very own creation story. For our creation story, we needed to compose the cause of the start of something and how it was made. In class we even had a real storyteller come to our school to converse with us about how she makes her narratives and she helped us incredibly by giving us procedures we could use for our story. When leading my story it was in reality quite simple to begin with an start off where and what my story will begin. Be that as it may, when composing my story it was difficult for me to have ideas starting with one theme then onto the next so my story will run easily.          One day, a billion years ago, there were these creatures that were as tall as skyscrapers and purple like l...

Animal Taxonomy? Well... If it fits the KOALAfications

Image
Leopard Gecko Eublepharis macularius Hi! The class my project was assigned to is called “Population” and our unit is called “In/Out” In this unit, we found out about the scientific classification of creatures, within creatures, and how life forms are named. I hope it fits the KOALAifacations for you. For this project, I, as well as my fellow students, have to choose an animal and study its Taxonomy and no, they do not do taxes, but the classification of an animal or animals by their Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. The animal I precisely chose is the Leopard or Panther Gecko. A leopard gecko is a type of gecko that lives in the rocky, dry grassland and desert regions of south-Asian Afghanistan, Pakistan, north-west India, and some parts of Iran. Their diet is composed of insects, including scorpions, sometimes they will feed on other lizards, so brothers and sisters watch out, you may become dinner. Taxonomy Name  Taxonomy Explanation...
