The Hate U Give *Exclusive Interview with Starr Carter*
In our second unit of Forbidden books, we learned about books that have been censored for big or small reasons. We went on a trip to see an author's book was banned in Illinois jails and was able to ask questions of why her book was banned. We also learned dogma. Dogma is a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true. Then we were able to choose a banned book to read and interview with a character. I chose The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. this book has won many awards and even had a movie less than a year later. This young girl named Starr carter experienced her close friend, Kahlil Harris being shot by a police officer unarmed. Then she chooses to go through the pressure of being a witness and go through code-switching with her friends at her all-white school and her home in the projects. I chose to instead of doing a podcast I will be doing a radio show.
Enjoli: Aaaaand we are back! What's good? This is Earthquake E. A lot has been going on in 2017. The statue of a Confederate General Robert E. Lee was going removed in Charlottesville, Virginia which led to a riot. Suddenly, Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old woman, was fatally injured by an oncoming car and died at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
We are here with Starr Carter. She was the witness of the late Kahlil Harris back at the beginning of the year which started a revolutionary riot. Born and raised in Garden Heights, Starr knows her ins and out of those streets. With her older brother Seven and her younger brother Sekani, Starr attends Williamson Prep High School. In Williamson, she shares time with her boyfriend Chris and her friends Hailey and Maya...
So! What brings Ms. Carter here in downtown Atlanta from Garden Heights.
Starr:(laughing) Well you brought me here, of course!
Enjoli: (laughing) Right! Okay. Question 1. Why did you have to hide what happened about Kahlil to your boyfriend, Chris?
Starr: Well… Chris was white; one-fifteen, the police officer who murdered Kahlil was white. I couldn’t bring myself to tell him, “You’re white, okay!?” I can’t tell him that I can’t be around his race because a guy killed my childhood friend.
Enjoli: Good, I totally agree, it would be hard to tell someone that you are afraid because of what happened. Okay, are you ready for the next question? It’s a little triggering.
Starr: Shoot
Enjoli: What was your first reaction when the police asked about Kahlil?
Starr: Well, she was very nice and empathetic, but when she said “Do you know if Kahlil sold narcotics? Pause. What the fu-” Can I curse in here?
Enjoli: Unfortunately, no
Starr: Okay but I was very upset that she thinks that Kahlil was a drug dealer like that was the reason he was shot. Which caused a riot.
Enjoli: Wow, that’s messed up.
Starr: Really messed up.
Enjoli: Okay, about riots, I loved your speech at the protest on the main road of Marigold Avenue. Let’s hear it.
Starr: Yes let’s hear it.
Plays Starr’s protest
Enjoli: Wow, (laughs) Wow, that was spectacular. No reason you are such an activist. Your words are very powerful and meaningful. I’m shook, like really shook.
Starr: It seemed it moved the protesters too!
Enjoli: Ok next question, it’s kinda off topic but, what is your religion?
Starr: some people think my family is Muslim “We aren’t Muslims. More like “Christlims” Momma became a member of christ temple church when she was in nanas belly. Daddy believed in black Jesus but follows the black panther ten-point program more than the ten commandments”
Enjoli: that’s very funny yet confusing. Well, it looks like we’ve run out of time. Thank you, Ms. Starr Carter you were an amazing guest and I hope we hear from you soon.
Starr: No thank you for having me
Enjoli: After this song, we will talk about The recent solar eclipse. After that, 2 Chainz has a bright pink trap house??
