Asthma can take your breath away

Lorane is a 34-year-old woman with a 17-year-old son who uses a lot of cologne, preferably Axe. So when Lorane walks in his room, the mask of the spray makes her cough and wheeze. She was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 11. She would wheeze in between her coughs and she coughs until she spits out clear mucus. So she drinks a lot of water to clear her throat When she was 11, she was playing with her mom’s perfume after playing, she has pain or tightness on her chest, which is the first symptom for asthma. Then she was coughing a lot and was wheezing, another symptom. Her mom finally took to the hospital after she had a hard time sleeping because she couldn’t breathe. That is when she was diagnosed with asthma. Now she has to stay away from strong fragrances and sprays. She will start coughing and she uses her daily inhaler since she works at Sephora. She said, “the hardest thing is to deal with is I have to live with it (the smells) every day”. 5%-10% of the world’s population h...

The Word About Bulimia is Stomach Churning

Image
In the second unit of my sophomore STEAM class, Disease, we studied mental disorders and learned about their criteria and how they affect people. We also examined the diseases on a scientific level using the DSM-V, we also took different approaches to experience a fraction of what people suffering from mental disorders go through every day. We also had to give an interactive presentation to our classmates. The goal for this action project was to educate people about what it's like to have a specific mental disorder found in the DSM, I chose Bulimia. I felt like Bulimia was very common in teens and but not talked about. We also learned how to use brain waves into a piecewise graph so we can see the changes over time. We have also made a flier to raise awareness for a targeted audience. The most difficult part of this project is the creativity of the interactive part of the presentation.   Work Cited http://www.columbia.edu/itc/hs/medical/residency/peds/new_compeds_sit...

The Hate U Give *Exclusive Interview with Starr Carter*

In our second unit of Forbidden books, we learned about books that have been censored for big or small reasons. We went on a trip to see an author's book was banned in Illinois jails and was able to ask questions of why her book was banned. We also learned dogma. Dogma is a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true.  Then we were able to choose a banned book to read and interview with a character. I chose The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. this book has won many awards and even had a movie less than a year later. This young girl named Starr carter experienced her close friend, Kahlil Harris being shot by a police officer unarmed. Then she chooses to go through the pressure of being a witness and go through code-switching with her friends at her all-white school and her home in the projects.    I chose to instead of doing a podcast I will be doing a radio show.  Tran script Passionfruit fades out Enjoli: Aaaaand we a...

War On Black People Or Drugs

In my Forbidden books class, we learned about censorship on books and how they were censored. Censorship on books is "a form of censorship that occurs when private individuals, government officials, or organizations remove books from libraries, school reading lists, or bookstore shelves because they object to their content, ideas, or themes." from Middle Tennessee State. People want to censor books because they think it will affect the younger generation to rebel against the traditional ways.   We also learned about Socrates and ancient Greece, their style of learning and Socrates' questioning life. Socrates was a philosopher who rebelled the idea of greek gods. He is important to western civilization because he shows us students to question things your parents and teachers believe about reality and society. That is where he made the Socratic dialogue. A Socratic dialogue is a communication that perceives two people where one person answers questions and the other questio...
